The
limbertoy is both a toy and a percussion instrument. It is said
that it was
popular
during the American Civil
War in the minstrel shows. To play it, you sit on a chair and tuck
the paddle under one leg and tap it steadily with one hand while
holding the dancer just above it. The legs clog madly and by moving
the figure
forward and back the arms swing like crazy. Of course, the dog and
horse don't have “arms”, but you get the idea. The variety
of rhythms that come from such a simple instrument-toy is amazing.
Children and adults are fascinated by these simple and charming little
dancers.
