In the beginning, “bones” were made from the ribs of animals and produced a characteristically hollow sound. Today it is more economical to make bones from wood. Each wood has a distinct sound, with the harder woods sounding more like bone with a sharper, less mellow sound. Cherry and walnut have the most mellow sound, while ebony, maple and hickory are louder and more bone-like. Rosewood is somewhere in-between.
